Hi Community,
I set-up PK_vid crossdomain tracking via Google Tag Manager but I’m not sure that I did it correctly. The two domains are penzonesalons.com and book.salonbiz.com. While traffic can flow both ways, it originates on penzonesalons.com at least 90% of the time, if that matters.
Here’s a screenshot of the GTM set-up. Is the trigger set-up correctly?
Was the custom code tag developed by you? Or did you get it from somewhere? If you need just the tracking code, the option to recognize visitors should be included in the tag template: Google Tag Manager: install a tracking code on its own | Piwik PRO help center
This is the Piwik Pro tag set-up in GTM, not done by me:
So you do have “recognize a visitor across domains” turned on already - does it work on it’s own (without the tag you added)?
Good morning!
Perhaps you should try it yourself, starting with each domain to see if pk_vid is appended:
-
Start on PenzoneSalons.com:
Click on “book now”
From https://www.penzonesalons.com/booking/, click on “book now and/or login” which will take you to [Online Booking - Powered by SalonBiz that GA4 is decorating correctly.)
-
Start on https://book.salonbiz.com/widget/
Click on the home icon in the upper right corner which will take you to https://www.penzonesalons.com/booking/
The only time I see pk_vid appended is when I follow #1, going to from https://www.penzonesalons.com/ to https://www.penzonesalons.com/booking/ which strikes me as wrong.
This is the first scenario, I see pk_vid appended :
The second one, no pk_vid. Are you able to edit the Piwik PRO standard page views tag? And can you turn off the “recognize a visitor across subdomains” option? I think it’s worth checking with only “recognize a visitor across domains” turned on.
Thank you for checking! One thing, however: when you were on the homepage and clicked over to booking page did you observe the PK_VID being appended, even though the domain name has not changed? That seems wrong.
Yes, I did see the pk_vid appended there as well. Theoretically, the subdomain setting shouldn’t affect the domain one, but I think it’s worth checking if it still appears with the subdomain recognition disabled.
First of all, a huge THANK YOU for assisting with this!
I have unchecked subdomains in the TWO tags. Which are:
SalonBiz (the 2nd site) virtual pageviews
And, Standard Pageviews:
I updated both tags to uncheck subdomains. What I am seeing has not changed but perhaps makes no difference:
-
Clicking from https://www.penzonesalons.com/ over to https://www.penzonesalons.com/booking/, pk_vid is added.
-
Clicking from https://www.penzonesalons.com/booking/ over to https://book.salonbiz.com/widget/, pk_vid is added.
-
When hitting the home button on ttps://book.salonbiz.com/widget/ to return to https://www.penzonesalons.com/, no pk_vid added
And just to confirm - is the tag you mentioned in the original post enabled? If yes, could you disable it and check again?
Hi Sara,
Three related tags enabled - which one do you want me to disable?
The last one (cross-domain decoration)
