Direct Traffic Statistics Superinflated

Since moving from GA3 to Piwik our attribution seems to be heavily moved towards direct - whereas in GA3

Google / cpc might have displayed 50k and
Direct / direct might have displayed 20k

They are now displaying as

Google / cpc 30k
Direct / direct 40k

It isn’t a clean cut straight swap and isn’t isolated to cpc - direct just seems to be hugely overinflated and taking up a lot of previously categorised traffic.

What is happening here?

Is there a setting that is causing this?

Thank you for the information. As more data as come into Piwik Pro, the differences at the medium level are getting smaller. Channels, however, is a completely different issue!
