Is it possible to create a checkout tag in the free version of piwik?
Yes, it is. You can use all our tag templates available in the Tag Manager.
Probably worth mentioning that there is no dedicated Ecommerce checkout tag in Piwik PRO: you can use a Custom event tag to track checkouts, but you won’t have data at product-level.

Thank you joao for clarifying. It is possible to track checkout, but you need to create a Custom event tag for that, as we don’t have a dedicated template yet.
As for the plans of adding such a template in the future, I’ll create a FR and let you know once I have some more info
